Martha's Shrunken Apple Heads!

How adorable are these little grumpy shrunken heads that Martha has come up with? They are made for a Halloween decorations, but I think they would be awesome for just a fall decor in general.

Tools and Materials
Firm, unbruised apple, preferably Granny
SmithKnifeMarker or pencil1
Cup lemon juice

1 tablespoon salt
Stick or branch

Shrunken Apple Head How-To
1. Peel and core the apple.
2. Using a pencil or marker, draw facial features, including eyes, a nose, and a mouth, on the apple; be sure to draw the features large enough so they won't vanish when the apple shrinks.
3. Using the outlines as your guide, carve the apple to resemble a skull.
4. Combine lemon juice and salt in bowl. Soak the apple for 30 seconds. Pat dry.
5. Set the apple in a warm, dry spot; after several days, the apple will shrink, and the features will distort.
6. Insert a stick or branch into the bottom of the head and place it in a vase.

The Nautilus House..

This is the Nautilus House in Mexico City. After seeing the second picture it it was like Wonka's wonderland and from the outside it looks like it could be a little seaside village church. The thought behind this home was; " the metaphor was to feel like an internal inhabitant of a snail, like a mollusk moving from one chamber to another, like a symbiotic dweller of a huge fossil maternal cloister."

Blue Holiday Table Decor

The holidays are right around the corner, our Shop is gearing up for its HUGE holiday gift and decor section and while I site here with all my windows open it feels like May! I can't even get myself into that holiday season mode. My favorite holiday is less then a month away (Thanksgiving November 26th) and I am so excited, food seems to be my one true happiness in this world, and what better Holiday to love then right? So today I will be touching on blue table holiday decor.

This is a wonderful table for holiday events, weddings, cocktail parties, Christmas parties. The hint of blue in the goblets brighten up the table against the white and silver. The silver dresses the table up and the centerpieces are hanging snowflakes in a cylinder vase. This is a good centerpiece for a holiday get together that has children. Kids will LOVE looking at this candy cane wonderland. The red and robins egg blue has been a new color scheme for event decor this year.

For a coastal holiday here is a table design. Robins Egg blue table settings with silver accents. You can buy metal pine cones from many decor stores around the holidays but why spend $3.00 per person on something you can DIY and find in your backyard? Find some smaller pine cones and starfish and spray paint then with metallic silver finish.

Drink of the Day

Blue Christmas Cocktail
Blue Curacoa is a liqueur made from laraha peels, which are similar to oranges, and grown on the island of Curacoa in the southern Caribbean Sea. Its gorgeous blue color in a cocktail is a stellar ingredient for signature holiday drinks
Ingredients
1 oz. premium vodka
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao liqueur
3 oz. white grape juice
Steps
Add ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.
Shake and strain into a Champagne glass and serve.
Joke of the Day
Two men were walking home after a Halloween party and decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery just for laughs. Right in the middle of the cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows.
Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones. "Holy cow, Mister," one of them said after catching his breath, "You scared us half to death -- we thought you were a ghost! What are you doing working here so late at night?"
"Those fools!" the old man grumbled. "They misspelled my name!"

Yet Another Announcement...

I know that I haven't had any new fun blogs this week. Only telling you about the new site and how we are being slack with the blogs :-\ Its killing me doing this new site because of all the work I put into the other one, but I know it has to be done and I think that's the only thing making me kick this one out as fast as possible. Hoping to have it up and running by the beginning of next week for all of the Christmas items we are anticipating showing everyone.

For now, until that site is up and running, I will only be blogging the Mid Week Blues, Drool Thursday, and Lazy DIY Friday, because Monday's and Tuesdays blogs take all day to put together.

Everything will be back to normal very soon!

DIY: Quilted Stems

So I was buzzing around the Internet this morning trying to find a fun DIY project for us all, for the weekend (its going to be raining here again, lovely). I came across a very fun site called Design Sponge which is a blog with great posts everyday about DIY's, recipes, and so much more. She must really have her hands full over there :-D While flipping through her lovely site I came across her recycled quilt flowers that she got off of Jane Joss an adorable little Etsy shop that sells these buds. Personally I would just buy them off of her because I don't have the hand for stitching, its great that even a DIY fumbler can get these incredible plants.
Obviously you can do this with any type of material even though recycling is always the best, some people (like me!) don't have old quilts lying around. You can take a look at it HERE. I am not going to re post it because she has done a wonderful job and presenting it.

Don't forget the vase either, I am going to use the new one we have in the store right now. Check out our vase section and pick one up to make this beautiful project a lasting memory.

Glow In The Dark Furniture

For drool Thursday I am going to be talking about a feature I found on AOL's Shelter Pop yesterday, Glow in the dark furniture. Not only would they be a cool feature to a party but a wonderful night light and electricity saver. Its not just one company that supplies these cool chairs, pillows, tables, etc.. but its becoming a new trend for designers all over the world.

I wonder why this wasn't thought of before. Its nothing different then the tables with the lights from beneath or the glow stars you put on your kids ceilings. They have made glow in the dark paint for years, this should have just been a given. If you look at there feature, only a few items are actually glow in the dark most are light up furniture which they have been doing for years.

The lighted console is "Coated with ELI (Eco Light Inside), an eco-friendly material developed by the designer, which creates a realistic, glowing effect when the lights go out." Also whats cool about this piece is a CD accompanies it with special music made up for this piece. Its like your own light show! The rest of the details can be found HERE.

The Glow in the dark stool is actually lighted instead, not actually "Glow in the Dark" the designers behind this also have a wonderful array of other light up furniture at Moree.
The next question should be, is it possible to make good looking glow in the dark material to reupholster furniture in?

Dream in An Artistic Room...

What I have for you on this Wednesday to cheer you up, and maybe put a little smile on your face is a hotel in Denmark called the Hotel Fox. The rooms of course caught my eye, which I am sure catches every ones eye when they first see this remarkably unique hotel.

Each room is a work of art and is painted by different artists all over the world. As a artist I drool over designing one of these rooms to show off to unexpected tourists, eager for something unique and festive. For some reason this style for a hotel is very Japanese to me, they seem very Anime like to me, a boutique hotel you would find in Japan on New York City, and for a price of about $300 a night it tops off that fee.

Here are just some of the rooms, you can see more at the Hotels website;

Lipstick
According to a news report, a certain private school recently was faced with a unique problem. A number of middle school girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.Every night, the maintenance man would remove them and the next day, the girls would put them back. Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the maintenance man who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it.Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachers, and then there are educators.

This Weather....

is killing me! 40 degrees all weekend now its in the high 70's. I went from getting ready to "hibernate" to my head floating away with the allergies. As I am writing this my windows are open and it smells like the beginning days of summer again, it doesn't feel like my birthday at all, and is suppose to stay this way until the first of November then its going plummet to frigid cold temps. I want to complain because the cold lessens the allergy problem, but looking at the radar and seeing the winter storm advisories for the mid west, I am just glad that's not coming here. This winter seems like its going to be a tough one for most of the country, even here I think its going to be colder then past years. Just in case you are wondering where we are, we are in the eastern part of North Carolina.

We hope everyone stays safe this Winter and keeps warm.

Relationships Between US and the Companies We List

OK ever since the FTC has come out with their new rules about the fact that I would have to tell my readers what I am getting from the companies that I list, I have been freaking out because personally I feel this will cause blind accusations on the part of the FTC.

So I am going to explain to you what I do here to make sure I don't get charged a $11,000 fine, when I make no money on this blog what so ever, nor do I get "free" things from the companies that I find and use.

Not in any way am I affiliated with the companies I listed on here except mine (Sunday Morning) and even then I don't get anything free from my business either (:-p). The ads on the side of the blog are clickable and are pay per click just like every other ad on the net. I am not requesting you click on them, if you find something you like then by all means take a look, but its obviously not required and many times go unnoticed.

The stores that I use for Decoupage Mondays and Stylzz Tuesdays are only listed because that's where I found the items that make up that room, not because I am making money off of them, nor get anything from them. The rest of the time I scourer the net all day just to show off something cool to you guys, not because they where sent to me to be promoted.

What I do here is free advertising to the companies that I think are cool, once again, not a company that I get compensation from. I use my store as often I can because that is what this blog is all about, cool reads and promoting my store (Sunday Morning).

I just wanted to make sure this was clear for anyone expecting to catch us in something we are not doing. If a problem occurs the only other thing we can do is not show off where to get the items we show and make our readers do the work instead.

This in no way is a lash out against our reader but against the FTC laws.

So here it is.

Lazy DIY Friday Uhmm Saturday....

Hope this is not too late to throw at you for the weekend. Its so rainy here and just one of those days, ugh...

Since Halloween is only 3 weeks away, lets get those pumpkins carved!
From ehow.com
  1. Select a fresh pumpkin in a shape that pleases you. Some folks prefer their pumpkins low and round, while others like them tall and oval-shaped.

  2. Cut through the stem end of the pumpkin along your outline with a sharp knife or pumpkin-carving tool. Use a back-and-forth slicing motion to cut through the thick, tough skin.

  3. Remove the stem end, which will act as a cap, making sure you scrape off any seeds or pulp.

  4. Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and pulp from inside the pumpkin. Hold the spoon by its bowl to get extra leverage while scooping.

  5. Draw a pattern for the face on the clean pumpkin with a felt-tip pen, or scribe the lines into the skin using a pencil. Be sure to make the eyes, nose and mouth large enough; you'll have a hard time cutting out tiny features when you're using a big knife blade to saw through tough skin.

  6. Follow your pattern as you cut all the way through the pumpkin.

  7. Push the cut-out features gently from the inside of the pumpkin and discard the pieces.

  8. Place a votive candle inside the pumpkin to create an eerie glow.
Better Homes and Gardens has some awesome printable stencils that you can use, you can find them HERE!

Have fun and send some of your carvings my way at customerservice@sund-morning.com and we may post them as the best of the '09 season!

Dog Mansions and Tree Houses

These are the cutest homes I have ever seen. Take a look at the rest of them HERE... To check out the tree houses there is a link on the side of the slideshow that says $20,000 for a treehouse. I could never imagine spending that much on a kids play area that they will just grow out of in a few years. My car didn't even cost that much haha.

A Piece of Art Kitchen, Mid Week Blues...

All I could say was WOW! when I saw this room. What a different look for a kitchen. Its so clean feeling with the light colors. The marble topped island is almost a focal point, a piece of art for the middle of the room. Don't miss the chandeliers, they are pieces of art in themselves. The floors look like they have lemon and orange peels on them, or lips and eye balls (haven't figured that out yet ;-)) I am not sure if I would use that as more floor if I reproduced this. There are so many details to look at, its like a wheres waldo picture haha.

Drink to Relaxation:

Blue Lagoon Recipe
1 oz vodka
1 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
lemonade
1 cherry
Pour vodka and curacao over ice in a highball glass. Fill with lemonade, top with the cherry, and serve.

Laugh Your Frustration Off:
How Baskin Robbins Got Its Name

Two robins were lying on their backs, basking in the sun. A mama cat and her kitten were walking by.
The kitten complained, "Mama, I'm sooo hungry, what can we eat?"
To which the mama cat, spying the two robins, replied, "How about some Baskin Robbins?"

The Dramatics of Candelabras...

Halloween is just around the corner and candelabras always remind me of those spooky old mansions. They are very dramatic and eye catching. Not only are they wonderful for just the center of a round table, but add a few to elongate the feel of a rectangular table, a table that only fits 6 will feel like 20.

You can dress them up with crystals and flowers or just leave them alone for everyday use. I love the use of carnations or roses in a bundle for the candles. They replace the candles with these bunches and it gives it an extra pop of color, which is wonderful for venues that don't except candles (and fake candles just don't look right with these). Also if you are just leaving them up for everyday use some fake flowers would allow this piece to be another piece of everyday decor. You can always have them come out so when you sit down to dinner you can remove them and replace with candles.

Here are just some examples;

Picture 1 : Is a beautiful display of how to you can use a candelabra to hold floral arrangements also. Its very Queen of hearts to me, I really love it. Bold and elegant.
Picture 2: Is an example of what I talked about earlier. Making bunches of flowers to replace candles with. It adds a great amount of color to an otherwise dreary table.
Picture 3: Has an arrangement in the middle of the candelabra with candle surrounding it. This is great for a simple candle holder that doesn't have much going on.
Picture 4: A elegant example of crystal use. The whole table just feels lit up compared to the dark room behind it. How the crystals hang off of this one can be done to any simple candle holder much like picture 3.
Mostly any decor place you shop has some sort of candelabras and can range from $15 to thousands of dollars. You can get them ornate, drenched in crystal, or just some metal bars with candle holders on top. Really the sky is the limit when decorating with these.
You can also find them right here in our Shop! These are the ones we carry;

Orange You Lucky!

Yep! The person who owns this room truly is a lucky person. This bathroom is just a beautiful example of orange walls. It has such a warm, beachy, clean feel to it. All I would want is a really comfy chaise lounge and a good book if this was mine. It looks so elegant but if you break down every part of it, it can be made pretty cheaply, which is awesome for us normal people ;-)

You don't necessarily need doors to the outside in order to get this style. Long windows with long flowy drapes would work just as well. Vanity's run for over $1,000 for one like this. Personally I would buy a old one from a yard sale and paint it to look like that. All it takes is a tan paint. Also some dark stain. Paint the whole table tan and then stain the crevices lightly. It will take some imagination and a good hand with a paint brush. The dresses on the left is pretty much the same thing. It has Moroccan colors orange, red, and goldish yellow draws with a black cabinet. A sponge and the paint will make this effects very well.

  1. Sheer curtains in tan (Bed and Bath Store)
  2. Lanterns for hanging on ceiling (Sunday Morning)
  3. Area Rug (Payless Rugs)
  4. Stool for vanity (Payless Rugs) This store has a wonderful selection of stools.
  5. Floor lanterns for next to the vanity and on the vanity (Sunday Morning)

Frame Wreath for Fall

So I saw these and thought it looked really cool since I NEVER see wreaths of different shapes other then circular. I also thought a star shape (which you can get as a styrofoam form too) would look different, and pretty.

But here ya go the lazy DIY for the weekend! (this project was found on Better Homes and Gardens)

Materials
Styrofoam wreath form (or a wire form)
Sheet moss
U-shaped florist's pins
Florist's wire
Hot-glue gun
Preserved fall leaves
Fall ornament (optional)

Instructions

  • Create a wreath hanger at the top of the wreath using sturdy wire wrapped around the form and bent into a hanging loop.
  • Cover a Styrofoam wreath form with sheet moss using U-shaped pins to attach the moss. (On a wire form, wrap thin florist's wire all the way around the wreath to secure the moss.)
  • Next, use U-shaped pins or dabs of hot glue to attach preserved or artificial leaves all around the wreath.
  • If desired, hang a pumpkin ornament in the center.

Remember you never have to follow the rules of these DIY's, if you feel you can make it better then do it! Don't ever let instructions stop you :-)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Drool Over This Ceremony Spot

This place has to be the most beautiful ceremony spot that I have ever seen. Its called the Infinity Chapel in Bali. They describe it as "the building’s simple off set triangle shape represents a romantic angle towards the heavens, while its physical attributes of marble, glass and steel are each metaphors for the male and female bodies and their interactions with each other as a couple. The remarkable steel framed glass wall that makes up the north side of the triangle embodies the delicate and nurturing characteristics of the bride as she supports the equally impressive marble south side, the stoic groom", how incredible is that description?

It can fit up to 60 people and I have seen some package quotes of around $5,000, that also includes boutonnieres and a bunch of other things that make the price seem not so pricey. But for that beauty I would pay anything. The walk way out to the water surrounded chapel is explained like you are not on this planet, because there is nothing around it. The pool is filled with dark river rock which brings that whole sarene zen feel all together. I don't think there is much I have to say, it speaks for itself.
